650B Camping Bike

This bike was built at the customer’s request to be similar to a 1975 Rene Herse Camping model. The heavy duty “low rider” carriers are based on a Herse design. The customer requested a mix of NOS vintage and new components. NOS Campagnolo Euclid wide range MTB derailleurs are controlled by eight speed Ergopower levers. The wide range TA triple chainwheel and wide range freewheel should provide a gear for all conditions and terrain. Large, 42mm Soma 650B tires fitted to NOS Super Champion rims make excellent wheels for heavy loads. The extra wide, vintage Lefol mudguards will give both rider and bike good protection in all weathers. Some unusual features of the bike are the brazed on lock and the steering “arrester”. The lock is a removable hardened steel bar that can be locked with a key between the rear wheel spokes. The “arrester” locks the steering when parking or loading the bike, making the bike much more stable and unrideable. Steering "arrester" The Campagnolo seatpost allows the saddle position to be moved backwards and forwards by loosening a quick release lever. A rubber strap mounted between two brazed on hooks on the chainstay prevents a bouncing chain from damaging the paint. The Schmidt Son hub generator and lights with the ‘stand light’ feature give excellent performance but the customer also requested old French style flashlights fitted as emergency back-up.
