The 2024 Paris Roubaix, Tour of Flanders and Milan San Remo were the fastest editions ever. The peloton is traveling faster due to numerous reasons: including increased carbohydrate consumption and more aerodynamic and efficient bicycles.
For several generations professional cyclists opted for tubular 700c x 25-30mm tires in the cobbled classics, but in recent years, there has been a shift toward wider, tubeless tires as they are faster, less likely to puncture and more comfortable on the cobbles. At this year’s Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix, some riders bikes had up to 700c x 35mm tires. Many opted for alloy stems and bars, rather than carbon aero monocoque cockpits for comfort on the cobbles and to reduce risk of breaking the bars in a crash.
Mathieu Van der Poel dominated both the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix with long solo breakaways. He opted for Vittoria Corsa Pro Tubeless 700c x 32mm and Dura-Ace C50 Carbon wheels. In Milan San Remo, which was won by his teammate Jasper Philipsen, the team used the same Dura Ace wheels with Corsa Pro Tires.
