Toronto expands its cycling network

We heard great news yesterday, as Toronto has announced it will expand its cycling network by 25 km in bid to ensure physical distancing amid COVID-19.  Cycling infrastructure is a vital safety and efficiency measure to support using bikes for transport. Cycle Toronto and change.org have worked hard to develop a coalition of orngizations and individuals who have been lobbying for better cycling infrastructure. If you would like to support this objective and are Toronto based, we suggest the following actions:

  1. Please send a quick e-mail to Mayor Tory ([email protected]) and your city councillor to thank them for supporting the new bike lanes including on Bloor-Danforth.
  2. As a way to build support for bike lanes on Yonge, please sign and share Cycle Toronto’s Yonge Loves Bikes pledge. If you are interested in helping with that campaign, you can reach out to [email protected] to find out more. You can also look up Toronto Centre Cyclists and Cycle Toronto Midtown whose groups are focused on Yonge Street.

Bike sales are surging as Canadians opt out of public transit and leave their cars at home because of the Coronavirus epidemic.  As a result, most of the bike shops in Toronto are sold out for the season of bikes priced under $1,500.

We have a few remaining 3 and 8 speed Linus city bicycles in the $939 – $1,199 price range.  Don’t miss your opportunity to purchase a practical, inexpensive city bike with fenders and a carrier.

We have great accessories for these bikes as well, like Brooks Panniers, Abus Locks and Lezyne lights.

An inspiring story: A 15-year-old migrant girl pedaled hundreds of miles to bring her injured father back to their home village. India’s cycling federation has taken notice. The New York Times shares her story: ‘Lionheared’ Girl Bikes Dad Across India, Inspiring a Nation.

Mariposa builder, Michael Barry recently reviewed three cycling books for the Wall Street Journal summer book guide.
