With the spring thaw comes a new Canadian gravel season. In southern Ontario, Paris to Ancaster, Hell of the North and Substance Project gravel events are just around the corner. Whether you’re lining up for your first gravel event or you’re a seasoned rider looking to fine-tune your race preparation, these tips will help you hit the start line ready to perform your best.
1. Pre-Ride the Course if Possible
Knowledge is power. Pre-riding allows you to familiarize yourself with key sections—technical descents, muddy farm lanes, or that surprise hike-a-bike stretch. Even if you only ride key sections of the route it’ll help boost confidence as you’ll be able to see the best lines while also dialing in tire choice and pressure. If you can’t get out there, study ride files or race reports from previous years and talk to local riders who’ve done the event.
2. Tire Choice: Tread and Pressure Matter
Gravel is unpredictable—tire selection can make or break your day. Look for tread that balances rolling resistance with grip. Watch the weather predictions so you can be prepared for mud if it is wet by choosing a more rugged tire tread (Ashlin Barry won the UCI Blue Mountain Gravel Race and finished 3rd at Paris to Ancaster on the René Herse Steilacoom Endurance Tires – both in muddy conditions) or if it’s dry you might consider something like a file tread with side knobs depending upon the terrain.
But just as important as tread pattern is tire pressure. A small tweak in PSI can dramatically change comfort and control. Use a tire pressure calculator that considers:
- Total system weight (bike + rider + gear)
- Terrain type (pavement, gravel, mud, cobbles)
- Weather conditions (wet vs. dry)
- Rim style (hooked vs. hookless)
We recommend using a PSI calculator such as the SILCA Tire Pressure Calculator or the Zipp Tire Pressure Guide, as they provide custom tailored recommendations that take into account all of the above factors.
3. Clean and Wax Your Drivetrain
Efficiency is everything, and nothing robs power like a dirty drivetrain. A clean, well-lubricated chain can save up to 5–10 watts—and keeps your components running smoother and longer, especially in gritty spring conditions.
Cleaning: Use SILCA’s Ultimate Chain Stripper and Bio Degreaser to get your chain spotless. Then scrub the cassette, derailleur pulleys, and chainrings with a firm brush.
Waxing: Waxing your chain not only boosts drivetrain efficiency but also repels dust and grit. If you are new to waxing, the Silca Chain Wax Starter Kit has all you need to get started and check out:
Top off your prep with a fresh wax the night before the race. (You need to ride your bike for 20 minutes post waxing to break it in).
If you’re not keen to wax your chain, use a good quality lubricant such as SILCA Syngergetic Lube that will last the day even if it is wet and will not attract dirt if it’s dry.
4. Fueling: Before, During, and After
Proper nutrition is key as gravel races will sap your energy, as you’re often alone in the wind, and constantly pushing hard on the pedals. There isn’t much worse than running out of energy and bonking with an hour of racing to go.
- Before: Eat a carbohydrate-rich meal 3 hours ahead of time.
- During: Aim for 60–90g of carbs per hour, especially for races over 2 hours. Use either a high carb drink such as Skratch Super High Carb Drink Mix or a mix of real food and high-quality drink mix, like Skratch Labs Hydration Mix and Energy Chews.
- After: Replenish with a recovery shake or balanced meal within 30 minutes of finishing. Your legs will thank you.
5. Hydration Advice
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. In cooler weather, it’s easy to under-drink, but dehydration still hits hard. Set a timer to remind you to sip every 10–15 minutes. Add electrolytes (again, Skratch Labs makes an excellent mix) to prevent cramping and keep your system balanced.
Pro tip: Pre-load with electrolytes the day before the race if the forecast is warm.
6. Gear On-the-Go: Apidura Bags
Gravel racing often means self-sufficiency. Having easy access to tools, nutrition, and layers is key. Apidura makes sleek, race-ready storage solutions:
- Apidura Racing Top Tube Pack – Perfect for gels, chews, and a multi-tool.
- Apidura Race Saddle Pack – Ideal for longer events where you may need a rain jacket or spare tube.
- Apidura Frame Pack – For a balanced carry that won’t weigh down your pockets.
They’re light, secure, and won’t rattle—essential for rough terrain.
Gravel racing brings out the best of cycling—adventure, grit, camaraderie, and a bit of chaos. With the first spring races coming, dial in your prep now so you can enjoy the ride and race with confidence.
